Despite the fact that many lines were badly run down at the end of the First World War, and that there were almost perpetual economic difficulties - including strikes, the Great Depression and road competition that ate into both rail and freight traffic - the 1920s and 30s saw many brilliant achievements, notably on the technical front. This was the era of real competition on the trunk routes to Scotland, of the streamlined locomotive, of enterprising railway publicity, of the ubiquitous restaurant car and cross-country trains including the famous through coaches from Aberdeen to Penzance. It was also the era of many branch lines that had already become anachronistic. H. C. Casserley writes from deep personal experience and involvement.
