Description

Chemin de fer. Ferroviaire. Train. Texte en anglais et français / Text in english and french ! Multilingue. The steam age is nearing its end on French Railways. The SNCF steam fleet now numbers some 500 locomotives ; by July 1971 there will be 300 ; and these will all be gone by 1973 except for preserved locomotives. The engines still in service, which perform exacting passenger and freight train duties, are the survivors of the magnificent machines taken over by the SNCF on nationalisation in 1938, to which were added in 1938-51 such famous designs as the De Caso 4-6-4s of the North and the American 141.R 2-8-2s which are the mainstay of French steam services today. Master railway photographers and knowledgeable enthusiasts, Yves Broncard and Félix Fenino have assembled in this book a wealth of photographs and detailed information describing characteristic designs of the former French railway companies and of the SNCF since nationalisation. It is fifteen years since the last steam locomotive was withdrawn from regular service on a main-line railway in the USA. Although 1968 saw the disappearance of steam from British Rail's standard-gauge system, the efforts of enthusiasts and the foresight and co-operation of railway officers have resulted in the preservation in Britain of a large number of locomotives. Only in 1969 was the foundation announced of a French railway museum at Mulhouse, in Alsace. Lovers of the steam locomotive have obtained permission to exhibit these various types saved from the scrap-heap, and these are described and illustrated in French Steam.
